Singapore’s leading LGBTQ+ movement, Pink Dot, is gearing up for its 16th edition, “Pink Dot Singapore 2024,” returning to Hong Lim Park on June 29th, 2024. This year’s theme, “No One Left Behind,” emphasizes the ongoing struggles of LGBTQ+ people in Singapore despite the repeal of Section 377A in 2023.
Beyond Repeal: Addressing Marginalization
However, despite this progress, the official press release for Pink Dot 2024 highlights that LGBTQ+ Singaporeans still face marginalization and discrimination in various aspects of life. This comes on the heels of the repeal of Section 377A, a significant step forward for the community. These challenges can include harassment, lack of access to certain rights, and exclusion from social safety nets.
To shed light on these ongoing struggles, Pink Dot is releasing a series of videos directed by filmmaker Sally Lee. The videos feature everyday Singaporeans discussing their experiences growing up, navigating relationships, and building a future.
Personal Stories, Shared Hopes
At the Pink Dot 2024 launch, a panel discussion with LGBTQ+ individuals of diverse backgrounds further emphasized these challenges. Panelists shared stories about difficulties related to transition in schools, job insecurity, and access to affirming healthcare for older adults. Additionally, lawyer Bozy Lu highlighted the legal and social barriers LGBTQ+ people face in areas like family law and estate planning, leaving them vulnerable during critical life events.
Letters to the New Prime Minister
This year’s Pink Dot Singapore event will feature a unique element – participants can pen personal messages to Singapore’s new Prime Minister, Lawrence Wong. These messages will serve as an opportunity for the community to express their hopes for a more inclusive future directly.
A Call to Action
Pink Dot extends an invitation to the public to join them on June 29th at Hong Lim Park for “Pink Dot 2024.” The event will include community tents, rally speeches, a light-up finale, and the opportunity to write messages to the Prime Minister. Like any event, the success of this year’s event will depend on public participation and engagement in advocating for change.
