Clarins, a leading beauty brand, continues its commitment to sustainability with the launch of two new shades in its iconic Lip Comfort Oil line. Building on their extensive collection, the new additions include #16 Fuchsia, a vibrant pink shade inspired by the Fuchsia flower, and #17 Fig, a unique muted purple. With an opaque finish and a hydrating formula, these lip oils offer both colour and skincare benefits, complementing any skin tone.
Sustainable and Plant-based Formula
The Lip Comfort Oil line features a lightweight and comfortable formula that is suitable for all-day wear. Responsibly harvested and 100% plant-based, these lip oils incorporated organic sweetbriar rose oil, organic jojoba oil, and hazelnut oil. Moreover, the line includes five pH-reactive shades that adapt to the individual’s skin and lip pH, resulting in a personalised colour experience. The lip oils are also safe for overnight wear, providing additional moisture restoration.
The Rise of Lip Oils
Lip oils offer a unique blend of skincare and makeup benefits. Unlike traditional lipsticks and lip glosses, lip oils provide hydration and a glossy effect without the sticky or greasy feeling. However, personal preferences may still vary, as lipsticks and lip glosses have their own distinct advantages.
Clarins’ Trailblazing Sustainability Efforts
Christian Courtin-Clarins, president of the supervisory board of the Clarins group, has been at the forefront of combating plastic waste in the beauty industry. In an interview with L’Officiel, he highlighted Clarins’ proactive measures, such as banning plastic bags from all Clarins stores in 1999, well ahead of French legislation. Additionally, Clarins discontinued the use of plastic microbeads in their exfoliating products in 2014, preceding industry regulations. The company’s next objective is to achieve plastic neutrality by 2025, which involves implementing recycling and offset programmes and reducing plastic usage by 30%.
Industry-wide Shift towards Sustainability
While some brands have recently transitioned to paper or biodegradable bags, Clarins has been a longstanding advocate for sustainability. The rise of social media platforms, like TikTok, has brought attention to issues such as microbeads in skincare products. The negative impacts of microbeads on the environment, including their contribution to ocean pollution and harm to marine life, have raised significant concerns among consumers.
Microbeads are minuscule plastic particles commonly found in exfoliating products, posing environmental concerns due to their small size, which hinders effective filtration in wastewater treatment plants. Consequently, these microbeads often end up in the ocean, posing a threat to marine life that may inadvertently consume the plastic particles. The matter escalated and became a trending topic on Tiktok in 2022. Consumers took to the social media platform to express their frustration after knowing that microbeads were still permitted in skincare products.
Ambitions and Objectives of Clarins
Clarins aims to go beyond conventional sustainability practices by introducing refilling options for its products. Since 2020, Clarin’s boutiques in France have been equipped with the Eco-Bar, allowing customers to refill their Eau Dynamisante and Eau Ressourçante products. Looking ahead, the brand has set ambitious goals to source 80% of plant extracts organically, offer 100% recyclable packaging, and further reduce carbon emissions by 30% by 2025. Clarins achieved carbon neutrality in 2020 by offsetting an equivalent amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions through removal or reduction measures.
With the introduction of two new shades in their Lip Comfort Oil line and their ongoing commitment to sustainability, Clarins continues to lead the way in the beauty industry. By prioritising responsible sourcing, plant-based formulas, and innovative packaging solutions, Clarins sets an example for other brands to follow, ensuring a more sustainable and environmentally friendly future.
