Since establishing its beauty line, Tom Ford has embarked on a journey towards sustainability, striving to make a positive impact on the environment. With a focus on both packaging and products making effort in reducing its ecological footprint.

Tom Ford Searches for Solution to Plastic Waste

In 2020, Tom Ford and his team joined forces with Lonely Whale, an anti-plastic pollution nonprofit, to launch the Tom Ford Plastic Innovation Prize. This global competition has been focused on finding biodegradable alternatives to traditional thin-film plastic poly bags, which constitute a significant portion of the plastic waste polluting our oceans. While thin-film plastic has become pervasive in our lives, we cannot overlook its harmful impact on the environment. According to Tom Ford, these bags often end up in the ocean, accounting for a staggering 46% of all ocean plastic leakage.

Tom Ford’s Plastic Innovation Prize encouraged innovative minds to develop alternatives to thin-film plastic. Together with The Estée Lauder Companies, they generously contributed to the Prize Purse, totalling USD 1.2 million.

A Viable Solution to Tackle Single-use Plastic

Recently, Tom Ford proudly announced the winners of the Plastic Innovation Prize at the Green Carpet Fashion Awards. These innovators are at the forefront of tackling plastic pollution, and their groundbreaking ideas hold the potential to revolutionize the way we deal with plastic waste.

The first-place winner, Sway, has developed seaweed-based, home-compostable replacements for thin-film plastic packaging. Their regenerative material aims to offer a sustainable and scalable solution to the plastic problem. In the second place, Zerocircle is producing wildlife and ocean-safe packaging materials using locally cultivated seaweed that dissolves harmlessly in the ocean after use. Notpla, the third-place winner, drew inspiration from nature’s method of encapsulating liquids. Their natural-membrane packaging is made from seaweed.

These winning ideas, when implemented at scale, have the potential to fight against plastic pollution. To ensure that the winning solutions achieve widespread market adoption, Lonely Whale will launch an Innovation Accelerator. This accelerator aims to propel the winners’ products into the mainstream, thus amplifying their impact on reducing plastic waste.

Made from 100% Ocean Plastic

Tom Ford’s commitment to sustainability doesn’t stop there. In November 2020, Tom Ford Timepieces unveiled the world’s first luxury timepiece made entirely from 100% ocean plastic. These watches represent an ethical luxury statement, created with plastic collected from the ocean, coastlines, and uncontrolled landfills. For every 1000 watches sold, 220kg of plastic will be permanently removed from the ocean, making a tangible impact on the preservation of marine life.

Such initiatives prove that luxury and sustainability can coexist and that responsible practices can be embraced without compromising style or quality.
